Writing: Moment in Time - Broken Toys

She sits in her castle, surrounded by all her best friends. Her dress is made of silk and lace and her friends all call her beautiful. She sits on her throne, laughing and joking with her friends. As she laughs she cries, painfully aware she is alone.

She brushes her doll's hair as she listens to Mr. Bear tell a joke. She laughs silvery petals of laughter, brightening her dark room. Her castle changes as reality returns. Her eyes fill with tears as she clutches her doll, begging for one more minute.

She hears her parents fighting and runs and jumps into her bed. Her friends all around her, protecting her; comforting her. Mr. Bear says it will be ok, she tells her doll. He will protect us if they try to come in, she declares defiantly.

She hears her father screaming and her mother gone silent. She hears his footsteps landing one by one, closer and closer. She hugs her doll close, hot tears streaming down her eyes. She prays that Mr. Bear will be able to save her. He loves her and that's what people who love each other do, save each other.

Her father opens the door, like he has done time after time. He has the same look in his eyes that he always does when he comes into her room. Mr. Bear will protect me, Mr. Bear will protect me, she chants while still clutching her doll. Her father slowly closes the door as he begins to remove his shirt. Mr. Bear will pro-...
