Writing: Moment in Time - Steps

He walks outside, the snow falling gently around him. He watches his breath puff and float softly by his face. He smiles as he looks about the white, snow-covered landscape, his mind wandering to better days.

He takes a step and then another, listening idly as the snow crunches beneath his feet. He lazily glances at the barren trees, whose limbs stretch up to the hazy sky in mute supplication.

He takes a step and another, carefully avoiding a frozen pond. Hidden beneath glass-like ice, watching him with idle curiosity, the residents wait for spring to come. The wind, cool and crisp, brushes his face as if to welcome him.

He takes a step and then another, watching a fawn graze to his right. The fawn raises her head and gazes at him with soft astonishment lighting her liquid eyes. Quicker than a heartbeat, the fawn is gone and only the faint echo of her hooves remain.

He stops before a cliff, watching the snow gently fall into the abyss before him. Carefully, he moves closer, peering down into the fog bank below him. The air, salty to his lips, stirs restlessly, not unlike the waves breaking far below. He smiles and sits on the edge, his legs dangling in the cool air. His thoughts calm, much like the forest he passed through. Only the sounds of the waves break the silence around him. He is content for the first time in his life, if only for this moment.
